UNHCR report, 800,000 flee abroad

(ANSAmed) - ROME, JUNE 18 - There was an unwanted record number of refugees in 2011, with 800,000 forced to flee across the borders of their country, the highest figure since 2000. Overall, some 4.3 million people were forced to leave their homes due to humanitarian crises, conflicts and violence, according to the annual report by the UN High Refugee Agency (UNHCR), which says that as of the end of 2011 some 42.5 million had fled their local areas.
