Crisis: Spain, ECB to reply strongly to markets’ pressure

18 June, 18:20

(ANSamed) - MADRID, JUNE 18 - The Spanish finance minister, Cristobal Montoro, asked the ECB today to reply "with strength" to the "insisting pressure" coming from the markets, in the light of the persistent "doubts" on the capacity of recovery of the Spanish economy and the future of the euro.

"The ECB has to reply with great strength, reassuring the markets, who are still trying to obstruct the development of the communal project of the euro," Montoro sais as he spoke of the 2012 budget in the Senate.

The minister agreed that the Spanish economic situation is "critical" and is going through "a crucial moment", during a terrible Monday in which the German Bono-Bund differential over 10 years nearly touched 570 base points, despite the results in the Greek elections which saw the victory of parties in favour of the eurozone.

The markets though "haven't released the pressure on Europe and Spain", Montoro pointed out, assuring that with regards to the persistent doubts on the Spanish economy and the euro, Madrid's government will answer with "clear and strong politics" of stability and with structural reforms.

Montoro also invited to "clear the field of uncertainties regarding the future of the euro" and to sustain the development of politics aimed to create a fiscal, bank and political union.
