The EU funded SafeMed II project seeks to mitigate the existing imbalance between the participating partners that are EU Mediterranean member states and the non EU members from the region in the application of maritime legislation, which is good for the environmental protection too. Among its activities, it funds scholarships to internationally recognized maritime universities. Safemed II has a role in enhancing maritime security in the Mediterranean, underlined Christian Dupont, Deputy Head of Unit - Maritime and Land Transport Security, at EC's Directorate General for Mobility and Transport. ''SafeMed - said Dupont - has helped significantly in this respect by emphasising the importance of maritime regulation and personnel training as the bedrock of maritime security standards''.
''Another important development - added Dupont - assisted by the Project has been an enhancement in the communications between States through SafeMed organised seminars and meetings''.
